Ballads – folk songs that tell a story through narrative verse – have been passed down through English, Irish, and Scottish oral traditions and continue to echo throughout the Appalachian Mountains today. Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters, storytellers, and listeners, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics, which he published in The Book of Ballads.

The exhibit, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all, singing is one way to keep ballads alive, art is another.

Charles Vess is a well-known illustrator of mythic fiction. Born in Virginia, he began his career working on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” followed by work for other graphic novels and illustrated books at publishing houses such as Tor, Harper, Abrams, and Subterranean Press while living in New York City.

Some favorite collaborations include Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Saga) and Rose (Scholastic) with Jeff Smith, as well as Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Folio Society) Joanne M. Harris (Honeycomb) and Charles de Lint (The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters). Over the years he has also worked extensively with British writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman), including their novel Stardust, which was made into a major film.

In 2022 his first novel, The Queen of Summer’s Twilight (NewCon Press) was published. Set in Scotland as well as across the border into Faerie it is based on the ancient ballad of Tam-Lin.

Another favorite is Walking Through the Landscape of Faerie (Faerie Magazine) a book of art, story and poetry designed by Vess with contributions from many of his favorite writers. Ten Penny Drive is building something. As expected of any contemporary bluegrass group, the drive is a must, but this isn't sledgehammer bluegrass. With every song, this group aims at building something in the realm of master carpentry--solid instrumental construction with a fine, creative finish in their vocal arrangements. When asked about the name, banjo player Riley Denton speaks of his granddad's tool box: "Papaw always had a bag of ten pennies in there. He made the good stuff with those nails. We want to do that. We're not using railroad spikes. This is Ten Penny Drive."

The group got started at Walters State Community College where Chip McLain headed the Folk & Bluegrass Club. The High Lonesome Senate was the club's performing student ensemble. All the members of TPD were students in the club. In 2020, with all the members graduated and Covid 19 putting a damper on performances, The High Lonesome Senate became Ten Penny Drive.

Whether delivering heartfelt ballads or energetic anthems, Pressing Strings weaves lyrical introspection and high-caliber musicianship that feels both fresh and familiar. Sokel’s smokey voice and intricate guitar work is complimented masterfully by a star rhythm section. Held down tightly by drummer Justin Kruger–an energetic and charismatic performer whose style mirrors his outside the box personality and unique approach to the instrument, along with bassist Nick Welker–a solid and stoic figure who picks melodic lines and chordal voicings that makes the trio sound full and lush. All three members sing, adding harmonies reminiscent of southern California in the 70’s. Together they push the limits of what a trio can do and provide an immersive, feel-good vibe that hits the audience’s heart as hard as it does the ears.

Recently the band has been touring the US coast to coast headlining clubs and delighting festival audiences at such festivals as Palisade Roots and Bluegrass Festival, FloydFest, Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420Fest, Cavefest etc while sharing the stage alongside major artists like Gov’t Mule, Toad The Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey and Neil Francis.

Ballads – folk songs that tell a story through narrative verse – have been passed down through English, Irish, and Scottish oral traditions and continue to echo throughout the Appalachian Mountains today. Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters, storytellers, and listeners, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics, which he published in The Book of Ballads.

The exhibit, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all, singing is one way to keep ballads alive, art is another.

About Charles Vess

Charles Vess is a well-known illustrator of mythic fiction. Born in Virginia, he began his career working on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” followed by work for other graphic novels and illustrated books at publishing houses such as Tor, Harper, Abrams, and Subterranean Press while living in New York City.

Some favorite collaborations include Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Saga) and Rose (Scholastic) with Jeff Smith, as well as Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Folio Society) Joanne M. Harris (Honeycomb) and Charles de Lint (The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters). Over the years he has also worked extensively with British writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman), including their novel Stardust, which was made into a major film.

In 2022 his first novel, The Queen of Summer’s Twilight (NewCon Press) was published. Set in Scotland as well as across the border into Faerie it is based on the ancient ballad of Tam-Lin.

Another favorite is Walking Through the Landscape of Faerie (Faerie Magazine) a book of art, story and poetry designed by Vess with contributions from many of his favorite writers. This book is only available through its publisher’s website and from Charles Vess himself. Please drop by his table and pick up a copy.

Vess’ artwork has also been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. He has won two Hugo, four World Fantasy, three Chesley, six Locus, one Mythopoeic, and two Will Eisner awards for Best Artist over the years.

He lives on the North Fork River in southwestern Virginia where he works diligently from his studio, Green Man Press.

Museum volunteers play a vital role in a number of key areas behind the scenes and on the front lines, such as working as a gallery assistant or docent, helping out in The Museum Store, working with the public at events, concerts, and programs, assisting with behind the scenes administrative or collections work and so much more! Our Museum Volunteer Orientation session gets you acquainted with every aspect of the museum to help you find your area of interest. Volunteer schedules are flexible and fun!

Cost: $5 per class or $45 for 10 lessons

Through a new partnership with Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM), the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is a new affiliate location for the program, offering weekly music lessons at the museum for children grades 4-8 and beyond. JAM Kids introduces music through small group instruction on acoustic instruments common to the Appalachian region, such as guitar, banjo, and fiddle. Students may bring their own instruments, or they can be provided as a loan while your child is participating in the program. Other instruments may be introduced as to be determined by instructors. Weekly classes will be held throughout the year, and students can join the program at any point in the year.

Registration is required to participate in this program. You can download the Registration Forms and bring it with you when you drop off your child for their first lesson or complete it at the museum’s front desk upon arrival. Each week, lessons will be filled based on arrival and capped at 30 students. Registration allows you to participate but does not guarantee your spot each week.

We do not offer online registration or spot reservations for this program. Lessons can be purchased as-you-go for $5 or as a bundle of ten pre-paid lessons for $45. The bundle is a discounted rate and will expedite your check-in process, but does not guarantee your spot each week. The class will be closed if capacity is reached before your arrival. We provide communities with the tools and support they need to teach children to play and dance to traditional old-time and bluegrass music. JAM introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region, such as fiddle, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program.

James has completed projects with Red Ridge Entertainment Nashville, Tower Records Nashville, Nascar Motorsports, just to name a few. He has released two singles to National Billboard Radio that have both charted in the Top 80 and received radio play worldwide. James has also won national contests (tried out for “The Voice” & “America’s Got Talent”) and received rewards along the way for his singing and songwriting abilities as well. He has released three full length albums with his most recent project being an all-original song “self-titled”. Each of these albums have received national and international radio play. His voice is often compared to that of Kenny Chesney, Ronnie Dunn, Alan Jackson, Travis Tritt, with a blend of Dwight Yoakam and Randy Travis just to name a few. He always pulls a great crowd at the venues and events where he performs, and people genuinely enjoy coming to his shows and feeling like they are a part of the show. Folks who come to his shows regularly know they will hear tons of songs that they will recognize, as well as several surprises and James’s originals thrown in for good measure and fun for all ages.

James has worked tirelessly and effortlessly to get to where he is today with his professional music career. Although the road has been very bumpy at times, all while he followed some poor directions along the way, James knows that it’s all part of learning and building character as a performer and songwriter too. Currently, he has some very exciting things in the works for future projects and shows for 2022. The series is structured as a three-act arc.

Act 1 returns to the origin: the recordings, the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and the raw sound that started everything.

Act 2 traces the evolution: bluegrass, the pickers, the women who shaped the genre, and the holiday traditions of the mountains.

Act 3 builds toward the centennial: next-generation songwriters, outlaw country, and the echoes of Bristol's lasting impact on American music.

Each night stands on its own. Together, they build something bigger: a community that's been rehearsing this celebration for an entire year.

More than music, ballad singing has long served as a way of preserving history, memory, and connection within Appalachian communities. Many of these songs were passed person-to-person and generation-to-generation long before they were ever written down. In places like Sodom Laurel, traditions survived partly because of the seclusion of the mountains and the deep commitment families had to carrying songs and stories forward.

This workshop creates space to learn these songs in the same person-to-person way they have traditionally been shared, while also connecting participants to the region’s resilience, history, and cultural memory.

Participants will hear traditional ballads, learn about the singers who preserved them, experience the traditional “knee-to-knee” style of teaching and singing, and have the opportunity to learn a ballad together. Questions and conversation are encouraged throughout the workshop. Whether you are already involved in traditional music or completely new to ballad singing, this workshop offers a rare chance to experience a living tradition that continues to connect many different communities today.

About Donna Ray Norton

Donna Ray Norton is an eighth-generation Appalachian ballad singer, storyteller, and culture bearer from the Sodom Laurel (Revere) community of Madison County, North Carolina, where ballad singing has lived in her family for nine generations. She learned these songs the traditional way, by ear and knee-to-knee, through her mother, Lena Jean Ray; her cousin, Sheila Kay Adams; and generations of Ray, Wallin, Shelton, and Norton kin, carrying forward one of the oldest surviving oral traditions in the United States. She did not inherit land or wealth. She inherited songs, stories held in memory and passed through bloodlines, where music is not separate from life but woven into it.

As the next in line behind Adams, Donna Ray carries the responsibility of keeping the torch lit and ensuring the songs that shaped her family continue to burn brightly for those who come after her. She has shared stages with artists including Ketch Secor, Warren Haynes, Grahame Lesh, Tim O’Brien, and Sierra Ferrell, bringing traditional unaccompanied ballads into contemporary performance spaces. Her work and advocacy for Appalachian culture have been featured in Oxford American, Rolling Stone, and Garden & Gun. As founder and leader of The Nest of Singing Birds and host of the monthly Old Marshall Jail Ballad Swap, she remains committed to ensuring these songs are not museum pieces but living, evolving traditions rooted in the mountains and resonant far beyond them.

Iglesias has been included in The Hollywood Reporter’s “Top 40 Comedy Players” issue alongside comedy giants Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Lorne Michaels and was also honored with the cover of Variety’s comedy issue. The comedian has had the distinct honor of being one of the few to headline and sell-out Madison Square Garden in New York, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and The Sydney Opera House in Australia.

On TV, Iglesias is the star and executive producer of the Netflix original comedy series, Mr. Iglesias, which is currently streaming 3 seasons. Iglesias plays a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater. He takes on teaching gifted but misfit kids to not only save them from being “counseled out” by a bully bureaucrat Assistant Principal, but also to help them unlock their full potential. The show won best Primetime Comedy at The Imagen Awards, which recognizes positive portrayals of Latino actors/actresses in the entertainment industry.

In addition to his comedy series, Iglesias has released four stand-up comedy specials with Netflix. The first in 2016 with I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry, which was filmed at the sold-out Allstate Arena in Chicago to 20,000 fans. The second, One Show Fits All, was filmed in front of a sold-out audience at the Toyota Center in Houston and debuted in January 2019. The third, Stadium Fluffy premiered in October 2022 and was taped in front of a crowd of 55,000 fans at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where Iglesias made history as the first comedian to perform at and sell out the largest MLB stadium in the US.

In April of 2024, Iglesias reupped with Netflix for a new two-special deal. The first of the new specials, Gabriel Iglesias: Legend of Fluffy, taped at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Florida last summer and premiered worldwide January 7th, 2025, earning a top ten spot on Netflix’s global most watched list.

On March 11th, 2025, Iglesias cemented his place in Hollywood as he received his very own handprint ceremony at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre where he was recognized for his impressive achievements in his career. He joins a small group of artists and talent to receive this honor. Additionally, it was also recently announced that Iglesias will receive a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles in 2026.

Last December, Iglesias co-starred with Tim Allen in the second season of Disney+’s The Santa Clauses. He can be seen on NBC’s Lopez Vs. Lopez opposite George Lopez which premiered on NBC/Peacock. Most recently he co-starred Tim Allen this year on ABC’s, Shifting Gears.

Feature film credits include co-starring roles in Magic Mike, Magic Mike XXL and A Haunted House 2. Gabriel’s voice has been heard in many animated films including the recent Space Jam: A New Legacy as “Speedy Gonzales” streaming on MAX. In 2017, Iglesias voiced the role of “Head Clerk” in Pixar’s Academy Award nominated animated film Coco. He also voiced “Babo” in Ugly Dolls, “Rufus the Dog” in Sony’s Golden Globe nominated animated holiday film The Star and “Cuatro” in Fox 20th Century Film’s Academy Award nominated animated film Ferdinand. Gabriel is one of a handful of comedians with a theatrically released stand-up concert comedy film, The Fluffy Movie.

On the small screen, Fluffy’s Food Adventures, a non-scripted comedic docu-follow series completed a 3-season run on FUSE TV in 2017. Gabriel was a recurring guest star on the ABC sitcom Cristela, and also guest-starred in an episode of ABC’s hit comedy Modern Family. Comedy Central aired Iglesias’ hit series Stand-Up Revolution for 3 seasons. Comedy Central also aired Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy in an unprecedented two-night comedy special to over 15 million viewers. The special was a follow-up to his previous DVD specials, Hot & Fluffy and I’m Not Fat...I’m Fluffy, which have sold millions of copies.

It was during his childhood that he developed a strong sense of humor to deal with the obstacles he faced. The show won best Primetime Comedy at The Imagen Awards, which recognizes positive portrayals of Latino actors/actresses in the entertainment industry.

In addition to his comedy series, Iglesias has released four stand-up comedy specials with Netflix. The first in 2016 with I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry, which was filmed at the sold-out Allstate Arena in Chicago to 20,000 fans. The second, One Show Fits All, was filmed in front of a sold-out audience at the Toyota Center in Houston and debuted in January 2019. The third, Stadium Fluffy premiered in October 2022 and was taped in front of a crowd of 55,000 fans at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where Iglesias made history as the first comedian to perform at and sell out the largest MLB stadium in the US.

In April of 2024, Iglesias reupped with Netflix for a new two-special deal. The first of the new specials, Gabriel Iglesias: Legend of Fluffy, taped at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Florida last summer and premiered worldwide January 7th, 2025, earning a top ten spot on Netflix’s global most watched list.

On March 11th, 2025, Iglesias cemented his place in Hollywood as he received his very own handprint ceremony at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre where he was recognized for his impressive achievements in his career. He joins a small group of artists and talent to receive this honor. Additionally, it was also recently announced that Iglesias will receive a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles in 2026.

Last December, Iglesias co-starred with Tim Allen in the second season of Disney+’s The Santa Clauses. He can be seen on NBC’s Lopez Vs. Lopez opposite George Lopez which premiered on NBC/Peacock. Most recently he co-starred Tim Allen this year on ABC’s, Shifting Gears.

Feature film credits include co-starring roles in Magic Mike, Magic Mike XXL and A Haunted House 2. Gabriel’s voice has been heard in many animated films including the recent Space Jam: A New Legacy as “Speedy Gonzales” streaming on MAX. In 2017, Iglesias voiced the role of “Head Clerk” in Pixar’s Academy Award nominated animated film Coco. He also voiced “Babo” in Ugly Dolls, “Rufus the Dog” in Sony’s Golden Globe nominated animated holiday film The Star and “Cuatro” in Fox 20th Century Film’s Academy Award nominated animated film Ferdinand. Gabriel is one of a handful of comedians with a theatrically released stand-up concert comedy film, The Fluffy Movie.

On the small screen, Fluffy’s Food Adventures, a non-scripted comedic docu-follow series completed a 3-season run on FUSE TV in 2017. Gabriel was a recurring guest star on the ABC sitcom Cristela, and also guest-starred in an episode of ABC’s hit comedy Modern Family. Comedy Central aired Iglesias’ hit series Stand-Up Revolution for 3 seasons. Comedy Central also aired Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy in an unprecedented two-night comedy special to over 15 million viewers. The special was a follow-up to his previous DVD specials, Hot & Fluffy and I’m Not Fat...I’m Fluffy, which have sold millions of copies.

Gabriel Iglesias is the youngest of six children, raised by a single mother in Long Beach, CA. It was during his childhood that he developed a strong sense of humor to deal with the obstacles he faced. In 1997, he set out to hone his comedic skills, and performed stand-up anywhere he could find an audience, including biker bars and hole-in-the-wall joints. Gabriel’s stand-up comedy is a mixture of storytelling, parodies, characters, and sound effects that bring his personal experiences to life. His unique and animated comedy style has made him popular among fans of all ages.

Ballads – folk songs that tell a story through narrative verse – have been passed down through English, Irish, and Scottish oral traditions and continue to echo throughout the Appalachian Mountains today. Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters, storytellers, and listeners, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics, which he published in The Book of Ballads.

The exhibit, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all, singing is one way to keep ballads alive, art is another.

Drawing comparisons to the likes of Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell, and James Taylor, Charles has quickly carved out a niche for himself in the Americana scene. Born and raised in Charlotte, Charles grew up surrounded by the sounds of bluegrass and folk, soaking in the storytelling traditions of the South.

Drawing inspiration from the landscapes of his upbringing, his music weaves together tales of love, loss, and the timeless pursuit of freedom.

Ballads – folk songs that tell a story through narrative verse – have been passed down through English, Irish, and Scottish oral traditions and continue to echo throughout the Appalachian Mountains today. Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters, storytellers, and listeners, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics, which he published in The Book of Ballads.

The exhibit, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all, singing is one way to keep ballads alive, art is another.

About Charles Vess

Charles Vess is a well-known illustrator of mythic fiction. Born in Virginia, he began his career working on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” followed by work for other graphic novels and illustrated books at publishing houses such as Tor, Harper, Abrams, and Subterranean Press while living in New York City.

Some favorite collaborations include Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Saga) and Rose (Scholastic) with Jeff Smith, as well as Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Folio Society) Joanne M. Harris (Honeycomb) and Charles de Lint (The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters). Over the years he has also worked extensively with British writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman), including their novel Stardust, which was made into a major film.

In 2022 his first novel, The Queen of Summer’s Twilight (NewCon Press) was published. Set in Scotland as well as across the border into Faerie it is based on the ancient ballad of Tam-Lin.

Another favorite is Walking Through the Landscape of Faerie (Faerie Magazine) a book of art, story and poetry designed by Vess with contributions from many of his favorite writers. This book is only available through its publisher’s website and from Charles Vess himself. Please drop by his table and pick up a copy.

Vess’ artwork has also been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. He has won two Hugo, four World Fantasy, three Chesley, six Locus, one Mythopoeic, and two Will Eisner awards for Best Artist over the years.

He lives on the North Fork River in southwestern Virginia where he works diligently from his studio, Green Man Press.

The band’s current lineup consists of long-time members Bobby Ingram on lead guitar and John Galvin on keyboards, as well as Tim Lindsey on bass guitar and Shawn Beamer on drums, with Jimmy Elkins on vocals. Molly Hatchet continues to honor the legacies of those members who passed away (including Danny Joe Brown, David Hlubek, and Phil McCormack) by keeping the music alive, performing across the United States, and throughout the world. Molly Hatchet celebrated their 40th anniversary with a world tour and the release of the double CD and triple vinyl live album titled Battleground. Recorded in both Germany and Switzerland on the SPV/Steamhammer label and featuring cover art by famed artist Paul Raymond Gregory (Dio, Uriah Heep, Saxon), Battleground has garnered rave reviews by their loyal fans, as well as the national and international press. According to Bobby Ingram, “In recording this album, we compiled a four-decade long catalog of songs that our friends wanted to hear. They would tell us what songs they wanted on the album, and we would record them. Some of these songs have never been recorded on a live stage before, and we were honored and proud to be able to perform them for many generations of past, present, and future Southern rock fans.”

Cost: $5 per class or $45 for 10 lessons

Through a new partnership with Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM), the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is a new affiliate location for the program, offering weekly music lessons at the museum for children grades 4-8 and beyond. JAM Kids introduces music through small group instruction on acoustic instruments common to the Appalachian region, such as guitar, banjo, and fiddle. Students may bring their own instruments, or they can be provided as a loan while your child is participating in the program. Other instruments may be introduced as to be determined by instructors. Weekly classes will be held throughout the year, and students can join the program at any point in the year.

Registration is required to participate in this program. You can download the Registration Forms and bring it with you when you drop off your child for their first lesson or complete it at the museum’s front desk upon arrival. Each week, lessons will be filled based on arrival and capped at 30 students. Registration allows you to participate but does not guarantee your spot each week.

We do not offer online registration or spot reservations for this program. Lessons can be purchased as-you-go for $5 or as a bundle of ten pre-paid lessons for $45. The bundle is a discounted rate and will expedite your check-in process, but does not guarantee your spot each week. The class will be closed if capacity is reached before your arrival. By affiliating with the JAM organization, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program.

A true throwback to traditional country, southern rock, soul, and blues, Clay Page draws influence from legends like Hank Williams Sr. to The Allman Brothers. His sound is unmistakably Southern—honest, gritty, and soulful—what many call the sound of the Deep South. It’s a blend of ringing guitars, overdriven twang, and melodies that feel as familiar as a long dirt road home.

A Georgia native. Like a tall pine gripping the washed-out banks of a Northeast Georgia lake, his music stands firm—rooted, weathered, and timeless. Every note carries the spirit of his “New Old School” sound, where tradition meets raw, modern edge.

Offstage, when he isn’t playing shows, you’ll likely find him working on old cars, moving dirt on his Massey Ferguson tractor, or spending time with his family and three dogs. A true throwback to traditional country, southern rock, soul, and blues, Clay Page draws influence from legends like Hank Williams Sr. to The Allman Brothers. His sound is unmistakably Southern—honest, gritty, and soulful—what many call the sound of the Deep South. It’s a blend of ringing guitars, overdriven twang, and melodies that feel as familiar as a long dirt road home.

A Georgia native. Like a tall pine gripping the washed-out banks of a Northeast Georgia lake, his music stands firm—rooted, weathered, and timeless. Every note carries the spirit of his “New Old School” sound, where tradition meets raw, modern edge.

Offstage, when he isn’t playing shows, you’ll likely find him working on old cars, moving dirt on his Massey Ferguson tractor, or spending time with his family and three dogs. Ballads – folk songs that tell a story through narrative verse – have been passed down through English, Irish, and Scottish oral traditions and continue to echo throughout the Appalachian Mountains today. Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters, storytellers, and listeners, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics, which he published in The Book of Ballads.

The exhibit, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all, singing is one way to keep ballads alive, art is another.

Charles Vess is a well-known illustrator of mythic fiction. Born in Virginia, he began his career working on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” followed by work for other graphic novels and illustrated books at publishing houses such as Tor, Harper, Abrams, and Subterranean Press while living in New York City.

LeGuin’s The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Saga) and Rose (Scholastic) with Jeff Smith, as well as Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Folio Society) Joanne M. Harris (Honeycomb) and Charles de Lint (The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters). In 2024 Trevor won the TN NEXT COUNTRY STAR Competition at Ole Red in Gatlinburg Hosted by SevierTV

Trevor is now signed with Sound Biscuit Records.Trevor is a singer-songwriter from Gate City, VA, a small town near Bristol in Southwest Virginia. Trevor and his band, Trevor Meade and the Statelines, play Americana, Country and Rock music influenced by the sounds of Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Eagles, The Lumineers, Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan. Trevor is passionate about songwriting and trying to tell the stories that he has lived through or seen others around him live through. Trevor released his first EP in the Summer of 2022. He began playing live music at the start of 2021 and since then has expanded to playing all over Northeast Tennessee, Kentucky and Southwest Virginia in the mountains he calls home.

Trevor began playing guitar and writing poetry in the latter years of middle school. It would not be until college though that he would fully commit to writing and singing the songs that were about his life and his home in the Appalachian Mountains. Trevor has been playing in bands since his teens but since 2021 has created his own solo career and band to set out on the journey he is so passionate about. Trevor has now dedicated his music to trying to tell the stories of the town and region he grew up in. Music has been Trevor’s greatest outlet since he discovered it.

Hailing from Bristol, Tennessee known as the Birthplace of Country Music; Jamie was born to a mountain music family featuring her flatpicking virtuoso father, Tony Collins. Instilled with a deep love and appreciation for the local traditions at a young age, Collins grew up attending festivals and fiddlers’ conventions, where she witnessed some of the best in old-time and bluegrass. Inspired by the musicians in her life, Collins would go on to sing, write, and pick up several instruments, including the guitar, fiddle, and upright bass.

In addition to the instruments that she plays, Collins is also a celebrated Appalachian singer, which has made her a sought after harmony singer on other artists’ projects. Her musical prowess has garnered her several prizes at Fiddlers’ Conventions throughout the region including the highly regarded Galax Fiddlers Convention and she has toured Nationally and Internationally to perform and teach music and traditions that she holds dear to her heart.

Collins has performed alongside her family, as well as with her own group featuring Brett Morris and Martha Spencer; The Blue Ridge Girls. She is known to sit in and accompany many groups throughout the Appalachian Region.

As a solo artist, Collins released an album entitled “Enjoy Life” in 2022, which encapsulates the positivity that she brings to the world. Offering a mix of original songs and traditional numbers, the album features a multitude of regional talent with Collins at the center.

Jamie released “Some Day” in 2023 featuring the cello musings of world renowned cellist Dave Eggar. In 2024 she worked heavily with his project Bristol Lightning and appears on The Bristol Lightning EP track “Appalachian Wolfgang”.

The Blue Ridge Girls will be releasing their all original album in 2025, and Collins is currently working on her next album that will be all original and feature her latest original single released in 2024 “Where I Want to Be”.

Ballads – folk songs that tell a story through narrative verse – have been passed down through English, Irish, and Scottish oral traditions and continue to echo throughout the Appalachian Mountains today. Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters, storytellers, and listeners, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics, which he published in The Book of Ballads.

The exhibit, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all, singing is one way to keep ballads alive, art is another.

About Charles Vess

Charles Vess is a well-known illustrator of mythic fiction. Born in Virginia, he began his career working on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” followed by work for other graphic novels and illustrated books at publishing houses such as Tor, Harper, Abrams, and Subterranean Press while living in New York City.

Some favorite collaborations include Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Saga) and Rose (Scholastic) with Jeff Smith, as well as Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Folio Society) Joanne M. Harris (Honeycomb) and Charles de Lint (The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters). Over the years he has also worked extensively with British writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman), including their novel Stardust, which was made into a major film.

In 2022 his first novel, The Queen of Summer’s Twilight (NewCon Press) was published. Set in Scotland as well as across the border into Faerie it is based on the ancient ballad of Tam-Lin.

Another favorite is Walking Through the Landscape of Faerie (Faerie Magazine) a book of art, story and poetry designed by Vess with contributions from many of his favorite writers. This book is only available through its publisher’s website and from Charles Vess himself. Please drop by his table and pick up a copy.

Vess’ artwork has also been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. He has won two Hugo, four World Fantasy, three Chesley, six Locus, one Mythopoeic, and two Will Eisner awards for Best Artist over the years.

Location: The Learning Center, Birthplace of Country Music Museum

Cost: $5 per class or $45 for 10 lessons

Through a new partnership with Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM), the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is a new affiliate location for the program, offering weekly music lessons at the museum for children grades 4-8 and beyond. JAM Kids introduces music through small group instruction on acoustic instruments common to the Appalachian region, such as guitar, banjo, and fiddle. Students may bring their own instruments, or they can be provided as a loan while your child is participating in the program. Other instruments may be introduced as to be determined by instructors. Weekly classes will be held throughout the year, and students can join the program at any point in the year.

Registration is required to participate in this program. You can download the Registration Forms and bring it with you when you drop off your child for their first lesson or complete it at the museum’s front desk upon arrival. Each week, lessons will be filled based on arrival and capped at 30 students. Registration allows you to participate but does not guarantee your spot each week.

We do not offer online registration or spot reservations for this program. Lessons can be purchased as-you-go for $5 or as a bundle of ten pre-paid lessons for $45. The bundle is a discounted rate and will expedite your check-in process, but does not guarantee your spot each week. The class will be closed if capacity is reached before your arrival. We provide communities with the tools and support they need to teach children to play and dance to traditional old-time and bluegrass music. JAM introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region, such as fiddle, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program.

Kristen Quon is an Emmy and Murrow Award-winning journalist, author, and evening news anchor at WCYB News 5. As the daughter of an Army service-member, Kristen lived in several places growing up before settling in the Tri-Cities to attend Milligan University, where she studied journalism.

Since joining WCYB in 2014, Kristen has earned numerous honors, including a Nashville/Midsouth Emmy Award for her reporting on the devastating Hurley, Virginia floods.

Kristen lives in Bristol with her husband, Kegan, and their daughter, Riley. She is passionate about storytelling and believes everyone has a story worth telling.

All street-legal vehicles, from muscle cars to minivans and motorcycles, are welcome to compete at Street Fights. The schedule will be announced soon. Street Fights brings a lot more than just head-to-head street legal racing to the table. Yes, you can race your buddy, or try to top your last run down Thunder Valley's quarter-mile, but there's much, much more. Some favorite collaborations include Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Saga) and Rose (Scholastic) with Jeff Smith, as well as Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Folio Society) Joanne M. Harris (Honeycomb) and Charles de Lint (The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters). Over the years he has also worked extensively with British writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman), including their novel Stardust, which was made into a major film.

In 2022 his first novel, The Queen of Summer’s Twilight (NewCon Press) was published. Set in Scotland as well as across the border into Faerie it is based on the ancient ballad of Tam-Lin.

Another favorite is Walking Through the Landscape of Faerie (Faerie Magazine) a book of art, story and poetry designed by Vess with contributions from many of his favorite writers. Andrew Gibbens is showing a selection of new and older works in the HollerHouse Red Room during the month of September. The exhibit will feature India ink brushworks, collage, and linocut block prints. Andrew has explored a number of visual mediums throughout the years alongside past work as a chaplain and a musical career as a drummer with bands such as Charlie Maples, this mountain, and Amythyst Kiah & Her Chest of Glass. Andrew’s experimental music project, Lyberarchelulo, has been featured a few times for HollerHouse events.

Location: The Learning Center, Birthplace of Country Music Museum

Cost: $5 per class or $45 for 10 lessons

Through a new partnership with Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM), the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is a new affiliate location for the program, offering weekly music lessons at the museum for children grades 4-8 and beyond. JAM Kids introduces music through small group instruction on acoustic instruments common to the Appalachian region, such as guitar, banjo, and fiddle. Students may bring their own instruments, or they can be provided as a loan while your child is participating in the program. Other instruments may be introduced as to be determined by instructors. Weekly classes will be held throughout the year, and students can join the program at any point in the year.

Registration is required to participate in this program. You can download the Registration Forms and bring it with you when you drop off your child for their first lesson or complete it at the museum’s front desk upon arrival. Each week, lessons will be filled based on arrival and capped at 30 students. Registration allows you to participate but does not guarantee your spot each week.

We do not offer online registration or spot reservations for this program. Lessons can be purchased as-you-go for $5 or as a bundle of ten pre-paid lessons for $45. The bundle is a discounted rate and will expedite your check-in process, but does not guarantee your spot each week. The class will be closed if capacity is reached before your arrival. We provide communities with the tools and support they need to teach children to play and dance to traditional old-time and bluegrass music. JAM introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region, such as fiddle, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program.

It was called The Negro Motorist Green Book, and it helped African Americans navigate safe passage across America well into the 1960s. Explore some of the segregated nation’s safe havens and notorious “sundown towns” and witness stories of struggle and indignity as well as opportunity and triumph.

Ballads – folk songs that tell a story through narrative verse – have been passed down through English, Irish, and Scottish oral traditions and continue to echo throughout the Appalachian Mountains today. Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters, storytellers, and listeners, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics, which he published in The Book of Ballads.

The exhibit, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all, singing is one way to keep ballads alive, art is another.

Charles Vess is a well-known illustrator of mythic fiction. Born in Virginia, he began his career working on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” followed by work for other graphic novels and illustrated books at publishing houses such as Tor, Harper, Abrams, and Subterranean Press while living in New York City.

Some favorite collaborations include Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Saga) and Rose (Scholastic) with Jeff Smith, as well as Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Folio Society) Joanne M. Harris (Honeycomb) and Charles de Lint (The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters). Over the years he has also worked extensively with British writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman), including their novel Stardust, which was made into a major film.

In 2022 his first novel, The Queen of Summer’s Twilight (NewCon Press) was published. Set in Scotland as well as across the border into Faerie it is based on the ancient ballad of Tam-Lin.

It was called The Negro Motorist Green Book, and it helped African Americans navigate safe passage across America well into the 1960s. Explore some of the segregated nation’s safe havens and notorious “sundown towns” and witness stories of struggle and indignity as well as opportunity and triumph.

About Scythian

Named after Ukrainian nomads, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays roots music from Celtic, Eastern European and Appalachian traditions with thunderous energy, technical prowess, and storytelling songwriting, beckoning crowds into a barn-dance, rock concert experience. The foursome made up of Alexander Fedoryka (Vocals, Fiddle, Mandolin, Harmonica), Danylo Fedoryka (Vocals, Guitar, Accordion), Ethan Dean (Vocals, Upright and Electric Bass, Percussion, Guitar) and Alex Kuldell (Vocals, Drums, Percussion) brings various influences together to create a conglomerate which is technically precise and steeped in various folk traditions. Rebecca Frazier’s lifelong journey between mountains and coastal waters is the backdrop for her flagship 2024 Compass Records release, BOARDING WINDOWS IN PARADISE, a tour de force album of bluegrass and acoustic roots music which landed on No Depression music journal’s “Americana Ten” and debuted at #4 on Billboard Bluegrass charts.

Frazier’s compelling original songs range from hard driving to thoughtful emotive folk. A bevy of acoustic A-listers such as Béla Fleck (banjo), Sam Bush (mandolin), and Stuart Duncan (fiddle) flavor her music with the wisdom and grace she is striving to present as she captures life’s juxtapositions with her new music.

Ballads – folk songs that tell a story through narrative verse – have been passed down through English, Irish, and Scottish oral traditions and continue to echo throughout the Appalachian Mountains today. Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters, storytellers, and listeners, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics, which he published in The Book of Ballads.

The exhibit, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all, singing is one way to keep ballads alive, art is another.

About Charles Vess

Charles Vess is a well-known illustrator of mythic fiction. Born in Virginia, he began his career working on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” followed by work for other graphic novels and illustrated books at publishing houses such as Tor, Harper, Abrams, and Subterranean Press while living in New York City.

Some favorite collaborations include Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Saga) and Rose (Scholastic) with Jeff Smith, as well as Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Folio Society) Joanne M. Harris (Honeycomb) and Charles de Lint (The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters). Over the years he has also worked extensively with British writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman), including their novel Stardust, which was made into a major film.

In 2022 his first novel, The Queen of Summer’s Twilight (NewCon Press) was published. Set in Scotland as well as across the border into Faerie it is based on the ancient ballad of Tam-Lin.

Another favorite is Walking Through the Landscape of Faerie (Faerie Magazine) a book of art, story and poetry designed by Vess with contributions from many of his favorite writers. This book is only available through its publisher’s website and from Charles Vess himself. Please drop by his table and pick up a copy.

Vess’ artwork has also been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. He has won two Hugo, four World Fantasy, three Chesley, six Locus, one Mythopoeic, and two Will Eisner awards for Best Artist over the years.

He lives on the North Fork River in southwestern Virginia where he works diligently from his studio, Green Man Press.

In the 1930s, a black postal carrier from Harlem named Victor Green published a book that was part travel guide and part survival guide. It was called The Negro Motorist Green Book, and it helped African Americans navigate safe passage across America well into the 1960s. Explore some of the segregated nation’s safe havens and notorious “sundown towns” and witness stories of struggle and indignity as well as opportunity and triumph.
